Help Our Parkway Trees Survive the Heat!

Help Our Parkway Trees Survive the Heat!

Our neighborhood’s parkway trees need our help to stay healthy during Los Angeles’ increasingly hot and dry weather. Protecting our urban canopy is something we can all be part of — and a little extra care can make a big difference.

How You Can Help

Water slowly and deeply.
Water around the tree’s root zone rather than just at the trunk. Young trees need approximately 5 gallons once a week, while mature trees benefit from deep watering about once a month.

Water early in the morning or evening.
This reduces evaporation and allows more water to reach the roots.

Don’t rely on lawn sprinklers.

Typical lawn irrigation is too shallow to adequately water trees during periods of extreme heat. Trees need deeper, slower watering.

Pay special attention to trees surrounded by artificial turf.

Artificial turf changes the environment around tree roots, potentially reducing the water and oxygen reaching the root zone. It can also become extremely hot in direct sunlight, adding to heat stress. These trees may need supplemental deep watering.
